Fabric Care Guide

Well-kept clothes look better every season. A few simple habits go a long way. Always follow the care label on each piece first.

Wool and wool blends

Air coats and knits between wears rather than washing them often. Brush wool coats gently with a clothes brush to lift dust. Dry clean coats and tailoring. Hand wash knits in cool water with a wool detergent only when the label allows, and dry them flat.

Cashmere blends

Hand wash cold or follow the label, press the water out in a towel and dry flat. Lift any pilling with a cashmere comb. Store folded, with cedar blocks to keep moths away.

Velvet

Hang velvet rather than folding it. Steam from the reverse side to release creases and never iron the pile directly. Dry clean when needed.

Satin and silk-look fabrics

Hand wash cold or dry clean, as the label directs. Iron on low heat from the reverse side.

Leather, suede and faux

Wipe leather with a soft, damp cloth and condition it occasionally. Brush suede with a suede brush and protect it with a spray before winter. Keep faux leather away from direct heat.

Storing your winter wardrobe

Hang coats on wide, shaped hangers and fold knitwear. Store everything clean, in breathable garment bags, away from direct sunlight.
